“Making Tamales is one of the most special traditions to me. Tamales are so much more than food. They are a sacred cooking ritual - revealing layers of celebrations, family practices, heritage and a connection to Maíz. Making tamales is a celebration of the love, care and respect for the time that goes into making each one... no two are the same. They are an offering of gratitude to the land, soil and rain.
In our family, we all have our favorite methods and ways of making tamales. I love mine with extra poblano mole. Each family and region in Mexico has a different technique, with the thread and the heart of creation all being intertwined at the core. There is a shared understanding that certain foods are a right of passage - to prepare and cook them is an honor and a privilege.
At Masa Memory, we feel a deep gratitude and love for the Tamal process… prepping the banana leaves, bowls full of ingredients, filling the leaves with Masa, wrapping & tying each Tamal, carefully placing them together in a pot to cook and then into their boxes to go. The process is a ceremony that we are thankful to be part of.”
